Stoke v Newcastle Preview

October 31, 2011

Tonight Stoke play host to Newcastle in what looks set to be a mouth watering war of attrition at the Britannia Stadium. Newcastle currently it fourth in the Premier League table level on points with Chelsea in third whilst Stoke sit 9th with 12 points from their opening 9 games.

Stoke away is now known as one of the hardest away fixtures in the calender as their formidable record and style of football is extremely difficult to break down. 1 defeat in their last 13 home games underlines this point! Whilst the Potters have been less than impressive this year, 3 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses suggest that they are still a strong team, but Tony Pulis’ team will be looking for back to back victories for the first time this season.

Newcastle on the other hand have had an amazing start to their Premier League campaign and are only one of two (the other being Man City) to still be undefeated in the league. Their first loss of the season in all competitions came against Blackburn away mid week in the Carling cup loosing to the last kick of the game in extra time. Pardew, whilst disappointed at the result, will be keen to put the game behind them and really kick on this year in what is looming to be a season to remember for the Magpies.

Injuries to Tiote and Best will certainly hamper the squad for the trip to Stoke, but the likes of Marveaux and Ben Arfa look set to step in. A broken nose to Steven Taylor last week has put doubts on his aprticipation in teh game but its thought that central defender could possible play with a mask on. Ameobi is still injured and will be for the next month or so.

Jonathan Woodgate could return for Stoke against his old team as he managed to come through 90 minutes against Liverpool with no problems. Danny Higgingbottom is still out with Kenwyne Jones possibly entering the starting line up for Stoke.

There’s no doubt that Newcastle will have their work cut out to make it another Premier League victory at stoke and the loss of Tiote and Taylor could be huge for the Magpies. Stoke’s unpredictability this year means that anything could happen at the Britannia Stadium, but both teams a re likely going to be happy with a point from tonight outing.
